About Us
Aquinas Literacy Center was founded by the Adrian Dominican
Sisters in 1996. We offer individualized English language
instruction to residents of McKinley Park and other south and
southwest side Chicago neighborhoods. We rely heavily on
volunteers and offer all of our services at no cost to students.
The
majority of our English language instruction comes in the form
of one-on-one tutoring. Each week we welcome hundreds of
volunteer tutors and area students to the center for these
sessions. Our tutors use a variety of proven teaching techniques
to advance their studentē“ understanding of English.
Each
student also communicates his or her personal goals to their
tutor, who incorporates them into each lesson. These goals help
students remain engaged throughout their studies and often focus
on basic needs like finding a job, communicating in the
workplace, or helping children with homework.
In
addition to one-on-one instruction, Aquinas Literacy Center
provides several opportunities for students to learn in groups.
These include conversation classes, computer classes, and our
popular Family Literacy Night. All of these programs build a
strong sense of community among students.
The
mission of Aquinas Literacy Center is to help students develop
economically, socially, and culturally. We help students develop
marketable job skills; participate in community, political, and
religious activities; and interact with people from other
cultures in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Aquinas Literacy Center is open Monday through Thursday from
9:00am to 8:00pm. We are always eager to accept new tutors,
students, and supporters. If you are interested in learning more
